This is Awkward by Sammy Rhodes is a book that lives up to its name.
This book walks through the awkwardness and brokenness that is the life of so many millennials. In this memoir Rhodes walks us through his own personal awkwardness. His struggle to cope with his parents’ divorce, depression, weight, and many other areas of his life.He is open and transparent about his life and struggle in a way that few people are. Rhodes ultimately points to the comfort of Christ who fully embraces us in all of our awkwardness, and if we’re honest we’re all awkward people.
I laughed, I cried, and felt uncomfortable at times. Rhodes journey in awkwardness in many ways parallels my own, and the journey many are on in our society today. If any of us were ever as honest about or past and present experiences as Rhodes is in this work we’d probably get the same reactions as this book has. I hope this book gain a wider readership and that many who are in denial or hiding from their own awkwardness would learn from this book how to walk in honest with themselves and with others. Our churches and our relationships could benefit greatly from dose of the transparency found in this book.
